Ben Folds Five Picture
Ben Folds Five(1994-2000) was a three-member band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, who until their breakup in 2000 were a mainstay of piano rock. Much of their work was influenced by jazz, evident in frequent improv-styled passages through bridge and/or ending. The members of the band were: Ben Folds, the lead singer and pianist, who also wrote most of the songs; Robert Sledgeon bass and Darren Jesseeon drums. The group enjoyed the success of the single Brickin 1998, a ballad written by Folds (with a chorus by Jessee) about his high school girlfriend getting an abortion. This song has, to a large degree, misrepresented the band to fans who aren't familiar with their other work; "Brick" is a serious ballad, whereas most of their music is characterised by jazz inflections and witty, humorous lyrics.

Boxing Lyrics

Ben Folds Five

Howard, the strangest things
Have happened lately when i
Take a good swing at all my dreams
They pivot and slip
I drop my fists and theyre back
Laughing
Howard,
My intentions become
Not to lose what Ive won
Ambition has given way to
Desperation and i
Lost the fight for my eyes
Chorus
Boxings been good to me, howard
Now Im told, youre growing old
The whole time we knew
A couple of years Id be through
Has boxing been good to you?
Howard, now I confess
Im scared and lonely and tired
They seem to think Im made of clay
Another day
Im not cut out for this
I just know what to say
I say
Chorus
Well sometimes I punch myself
Hard as I can, yelling
Nobody cares
Hoping some one will tell me
How wrong I am
Howard,
Chorus
Boxings been good to me howard
Now Im told
Youre growing old
The whole time you knew
A couple of years
Id be through
Has boxing been good. . .
Has boxing been good. . .
Has boxing been good?
