Ben Folds Five Picture
Ben Folds Five(1994-2000) was a three-member band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, who until their breakup in 2000 were a mainstay of piano rock. Much of their work was influenced by jazz, evident in frequent improv-styled passages through bridge and/or ending. The members of the band were: Ben Folds, the lead singer and pianist, who also wrote most of the songs; Robert Sledgeon bass and Darren Jesseeon drums. The group enjoyed the success of the single Brickin 1998, a ballad written by Folds (with a chorus by Jessee) about his high school girlfriend getting an abortion. This song has, to a large degree, misrepresented the band to fans who aren't familiar with their other work; "Brick" is a serious ballad, whereas most of their music is characterised by jazz inflections and witty, humorous lyrics.

Carrying Cathy Lyrics

Ben Folds Five

Her window was hung like a painting
She worried it might come to life
She stared for hours
So obsessed was I and self-absorbed that i
Didnt see that she was
Crying
There was always someone carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always someones carrying cathy
There were times when Id find myself saying that:
Friends, you dont understand
And shes different when its just me and her, and i
Closed the door and I tried to hang on and she
Sank into the dark
I was over my head
There was always someone carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always someones carrying cathy
We gave you everything
You could have been anything
We gave you everything
You could have done anything
But to imagine a fall
With no one at all to catch you
Thered always been someone
Then one night she climbed into the picture frame
Out in the frozen air
And out of sight
Woke up sad from this dream Ive been having
The last couple nights or so
With her father and brothers were all at the funeral
Carrying a box through the rain
Then somebody says that its always been this way
Always someones carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always someones carrying cathy
