Ben Folds Five(1994-2000) was a three-member band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, who until their breakup in 2000 were a mainstay of piano rock. Much of their work was influenced by jazz, evident in frequent improv-styled passages through bridge and/or ending. The members of the band were: Ben Folds, the lead singer and pianist, who also wrote most of the songs; Robert Sledgeon bass and Darren Jesseeon drums. The group enjoyed the success of the single Brickin 1998, a ballad written by Folds (with a chorus by Jessee) about his high school girlfriend getting an abortion. This song has, to a large degree, misrepresented the band to fans who aren't familiar with their other work; "Brick" is a serious ballad, whereas most of their music is characterised by jazz inflections and witty, humorous lyrics.

September 75 I was 47 inches high
Mom said someday I would have
A bad ass mother g.i. joe
For your little minds to blow
I still got beat up after class
Now Im big and important
One angry dwarf
And 200 solemn faces
Are you
If you want to see me
Check your papers and your t.v.
Look whos tellin who what to do
Kiss my ass good-bye
Dont give me that bullshit
You know who I am
Im your nightmare little man
Vic you stole my lunch money.
Made me cry.
Jane remember second grade
Said you couldnt stand my face
Rather than kiss me you said
Youd rather die
Youll be sorry one day
Yes you will, yes you will
You shouldnt push me around
Cause I will, yes I will
You will be sorry when Im big
Yes you will be sorry
